Anne Schwartz started Blue Heron Farm in 1980, a certified organic farm since 1981. She has a deep passion to ensure the survival of small and family farms and has dedicated her life to working in community with others at the state, regional and national levels to advocate policies that protect the integrity of organic agriculture, increase research for organic and sustainable food systems and supports regional agriculture.

Anne has been producing ten acres of vegetables and berries in the Upper Skagit Valley near the town of Rockport for several decades and has made the decision to turn over much of the vegetable production to former employees. This is very exciting and the farm is now into the second year of this transition. Elizabeth Bragg has assumed the farm’s CSA operation as well as several crops grown for the Skagit Food Coop in Mt. Vernon. You can find her at Long Hearing Farm. Our fruit is still available through her CSA.

We had a tremendous amount of support from other farmers in my early years and I believe we need to pass on the difficult lessons learned along the way to newer farmers as much as we can. I have been blessed to farm on beautiful land, in a beautiful valley, in a great community.

Farm Practices

I believe strongly in being Certified Organic. The rules require constant evaluation and improvement of farm practices. I pay close attention to balancing micro-nutrients which is critical for vigorous healthy plants, assuring the best nutritional value and fruit quality. We look for ways to reduce tillage and I have been able to mow my winter cover crops to encourage clover in the aisles that provides year round cover crops to increase carbon sequestration. We now rake and till our blueberries once a year post harvest to control mummy berry and fruit flies, our most difficult challenges for organic production.
